Designed by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the Sydney Opera House is an iconic, multi-venue performing arts centre located in Sydney. It boasts one of the most stunning vistas of the Sydney landscape and is bathed by the majestic waters of Sydney Harbour. The Opera House was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2007, becoming the youngest cultural site in the world to be given such an honour.
The sails of the Opera House may appear serene in their pearly glow, but behind this shinny veneer the history of the House was not always smooth sailing. Pressure from the Askin State Government forced the resignation of the architect, and after his departure the cost blew out to a reported $102 million dollars, a sum that dwarfs the $22.9 million that had been spent by October 1966 at the time of Utzon's resignation.
